In this article we study, up to linear equivalence, the curves lying on a general smooth surface \(S \subset \mathbb{P}^ 3\) containing a fixed curve \(C\). If \[ \deg S > \max \{3, \deg C,\quad\text{degrees of the minimal generators of the ideal of }C\} \] we show that all curves on \(S\) are a linear combination of the hyperplane section \(H\) of \(S\) and \(C\), that is \(\text{Pic} S \cong \mathbb{Z}^ 2\) generated by \({\mathcal O}_ S(1)\) and \({\mathcal O}_ S(C)\). This is accomplished by proving that if \(\gamma \in H^{1,1} (S)\) is the class of a curve, a general deformation \(S'\) of \(S\), \(S' \supset C\), keeps \(\gamma\) of type (1,1) if and only if \(\gamma\) is a linear combination of the classes of \(H\) and \(C\). The results of this paper have been generalized by the author in Mem. Am. Math. Soc. 438 (1991; Zbl 0736.14012). On the other hand the techniques used in the paper under review are different and may apply to other situations.
