A subgroup \(H\) of a group \(G\) is called virtually normal if it has only finitely many conjugates in \(G\). Clearly, this is a generalization of normal subgroups. Questions on modularity and distributivity for the lattice \(vn(G)\) of all virtually normal subgroups are derived. The first main result relates modularity of \(vn(G)\) to modularity of certain sections of \(G\): Theorem 2.2 -- For a group \(G\) the following conditions are equivalent: (i) the lattice \(vn(G)\) is modular; (ii) if \(H \triangleleft N \leq G\) and \(| G : N|\) is finite, then \(N/H\) has modular \(FC\)-center. A similar result for distributivity is: Theorem 3.2 -- For a group \(G\) the following conditions are equivalent: (i) the lattice \(vn(G)\) is distributive; (ii) for every normal subgroup \(N\) of \(G\) with finite index \(vn(N)\) is distributive and \(G/N\) is cyclic. In the course of the proof, a classification of distributivity for the lattice of normal subgroups of finite groups [\textit{R. Brandl}, Glasg. J. Math. 31, No. 2, 183-188 (1989; Zbl 0676.20011)] is extended to all groups. Furthermore, some conditions for virtually normal subgroups to be normal are derived in the case when \(vn(G)\) is distributive.
