The purpose of the present paper is twofold. First, we study the relation between microscopic instabilities (i.e., the existence of nontrivial solutions to the linearized homogeneous problem) and the corresponding macroscopic instabilities (i.e., the failure of strong ellipticity for the homogenized incremental moduli). One of the main results is that long wavelength instabilities for the linearized problem lead to loss of rank- one convexity of the homogenized energy density. Secondly, we investigate the commutability issue between the homogenization and the linearization operations in nonlinear periodic composites.
