Orthomodular lattices generalize the lattices of closed subspaces of Hilbert spaces. The Sasaki projection \(\varphi_ x(a)= x\wedge (x^ \perp\vee a)\) in an orthomodular lattice is a generalization of the orthogonal projection onto \(X\). The paper presents the first detailed treatment of compositions of Sasaki projections. Finite compositions of Sasaki projections form a Baer \(^*\)-semigroup if we take for the involution the composition in the reverse order. Using the combination of techniques of orthomodular lattices and of Baer \(^*\)-semigroups, the authors prove a new characterization of kernels of congruences in orthomodular lattices (\(p\)-ideals), a generalized parallelogram law, etc. They also discuss the interpretation in quantum logic and support arguments for the Pool's approach to quantum measurement.
