The problem of embedding sums \(\bigoplus_{\mathbb{N}} X\) of Banach spaces into large products \(X^ J\) of the same Banach space is considered. The first result in this direction corresponds to \textit{S. A. Saxon} [Math. Ann. 197, 87-106 (1972; Zbl 0243.46011)], who solved it for \(X\) finite- dimensional and \(I\) countable. For \(X\) a Hilbert space, the problem was solved by the author in [Proc. Am. Math. Soc. 107, No. 1, 101-105 (1989; Zbl 0693.46016)]. In the first part of the paper, criteria are given for arbitrary Banach space to satisfy this embedding. The criteria are given in terms of the subfactorization of certain ``diagonal'' operators. The second part is devoted to replace subfactorization arguments by tensor product statements. Examples, showing that most of the classical Banach spaces satisfy the countable embedding, and some counterexamples are given in the last part.
