In the paper under review all groups considered are finite. Given a group \(G\), a series of subgroups \(G = G_0 > G_1 > \cdots > G_{n-1} > G_n = 1\) is said to be a maximal subgroup series of \(G\) if \(G_i\) is a maximal subgroup of \(G_{i-1}\) for every \(i = 1, \ldots , n.\) The authors study the group structure of \(G\) under the assumption that all \(G_i\) have some permutability properties. In particular, they consider S-permutability and completely conditional permutability. A subgroup \(A\) of a group \(G\) is said to be S-permutable in \(G\) if \(A\) permutes with all Sylow subgroups of \(G\) and it is said to be completely conditional permutable (c-c-permutable for brevity) in \(G\) if, for each subgroup \(H\) of \(G\), there exists an element \( g \in <A,H>\) such that \(AH^{g} = H^{g}A\). A maximal subgroup series \(G = G_0 > G_1 > \cdots > G_{n-1} > G_n = 1\) of \(G\) is called S-permutable (respectively, c-c-permutable) if all \(G_i\) are S-permutable (respectively, c-c-permutable) in \(G\).\N\NThe main results in the paper state that a group \(G\) is supersolvable if and only if \(G\) possesses either an S-permutable maximal subgroup series (Theorem 1.2), or a c-c-permutable maximal subgroup series (Theorem 1.2).
