      In the paper under review, the authors study differential symmetry breaking operators between the principal series representations for the pair \((\mathrm{GL}_{n+1}(\mathbb R), \mathrm{GL}_n(\mathbb R))\), that is, to construct and classify intertwining operators between the the restriction \(\pi|_H\) of an irreducible principal series representation \(\pi\) of the group \(G=\mathrm{GL}_{n+1}(\mathbb R)\) and the irreducible representations of the subgroup \(H=\mathrm{GL}_n(\mathbb R)\).\N\NLet \((G,H) = (\mathrm{GL}_{n+1}(\mathbb R), \mathrm{GL}_n(\mathbb R))\) with their minimal parabolic subgroups \(P_G,P_H\) and their flag manifolds \((G/P_G,H/P_H)\). Consider the principal series representations as smooth normalized induction \(\pi_{\xi,\lambda} = \mathrm{Ind}^G_{P_G}(\xi \otimes e^\lambda \otimes 1)\) and \(\pi_{\eta,\nu} = \mathrm{Ind}^H_{P_H}(\eta \otimes e^\nu \otimes 1)\)\N\NThe main results of the paper (Theorems A \& B) are as follows:\N\begin{itemize}\N\item the space of differential symmetry breaking operators with distributional support \({}_{x_k}P_G\) is 0 or 1;\N\N\item In the latter case they are given by the restriction \(\mathrm{res_k}\circ \mathcal L_{\alpha,k}: \pi_{\xi,\lambda} \to \pi_{\eta,\nu}\) of the family \(\mathcal L_{\alpha,k}= \mathcal F_1^{\alpha_1}\circ \dots \circ \mathcal F_k^{\alpha_k}\circ \mathcal D_{k+2}^{\alpha_{k+1}}\circ \dots\circ \mathcal D_{n+1}^{\alpha_n}\) of compositions (Theorem 3.4) intertwining operators;\N\N\item The differential symmetry breaking operators \(\mathrm{res_k}\circ \mathcal L_{\alpha,k}\) are the residues of the meromorphic family (Theorem 4.5) \(A_{\xi,\lambda}^{\eta,\nu}\).\end{itemize}
