This paper is concerned with a nonnegative solution of the semipositone problem \[ -\Delta u=\lambda f(u)\text{ in }\Omega\quad\text{and }u=0\text{ on }\partial\Omega, \] where \(\lambda\) is a positive constant, \(\Omega\) is a bounded domain in \(\mathbb{R}^ n\) and \(f(u)\) is a smooth function such that \(f'(u)\) is bounded from below, \(f(0)<0\) and \(\lim_{u\to\infty}{f(u)\over u}=0\). The nonexistence result for \(\lambda\) small enough is shown in a routine manner. Through the sub and super solution method, the existence results for \(\lambda\) in an interval close to the smallest eigenvalue of \(- \Delta\) with Dirichlet boundary condition and for \(\lambda\) large enough are obtained under some conditions added respectively.
