Let \(\sigma(\xi)\) be a symbol such that \(|\sigma(\xi)|\to\infty\) as \(|\xi|\to\infty\). The first result is that the spectrum of the associated pseudodifferential operator \(T_ \sigma: {\mathcal S}\to {\mathcal S}\) is equal to \(\Sigma(T_ \sigma)=\{\sigma(\xi)\): \(\xi\in \mathbb{R}^ n\}\). Suppose in addition that the Lebesgue measure of the set of critical points of \(\sigma(\xi)\) is equal to zero. This is in particular true for any non-constant real analytic function. Then the spectrum of \(T_ \sigma\) is equal to its point spectrum. This remains true when \(T_ \sigma\) is considered as an operator on the space of tempered distributions \({\mathcal S}'\).
