An optimal control problem for systems described by Hammerstein type nonlinear integral equations without constraints is considered. Necessary optimality conditions in the form of a maximum principle are determined. Sufficient optimality conditions are obtained in the linear case. An existence theorem for an optimal control is not given, but such a result can easily be obtained in the linear case. Necessary optimality conditions can be determined in the form of a stationarity condition because the constraints are absent. The optimal control problem is also considered with constraints. Then, sufficient optimality conditions for the linear system can be obtained even for a convex cost functional, not only for a linear one.
