This paper addresses two problems on the numerical solution of the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations: enlarging the time step for the implicit projection method and resolving boundary layers efficiently with local mesh refinement. First, the Temam implicit scheme is modified for the staggered mesh retaining unconditional nonlinear stability. Then the complete projection method and the pressure correction method are studied; the latter was found to be more accurate, but its convergence to steady state is slow for a large time step. A modified pressure correction method is suggested to improve this convergence.
