The purpose of this lecture is to present a review on general properties of dynamical systems, practical perturbation methods and their connections. A particular care will be paid to the technique of successive elimination of harmonics, originally conceived by Delaunay and further developed by the author from both the algorithmic and the theoretical points of view. We will show how, by applying this technique, one follows in practice a piece of the road that leads both to the KAM theorem and to a Nekhoroshev-like result.
