The author studies the long-time behavior of nonnegative solutions of the problem \[ u_ t=(u^ m)_{xx}+\left( {\varepsilon \over n} \right)(u^ n)_ x \text{ in } (0,1) \times (0,\infty) \] subject to the boundary conditions \(u(0,t)=0\), \((u^ m)_ x(1,t)=au^ p(1,t)\). Here \(p,n \geq m \geq 1\). Since \(a>0\), the boundary condition at \(x=1\) may lead to blow-up phenomena. The author extends previous results due to \textit{H. A. Levine} [SIAM J. Math. Anal. 19, No. 2, 312-336 (1988; Zbl 0696.35159)] concerning the Burgers equation \((m=1,n=2)\). He obtains bifurcation diagrams for the stationary solutions in all of the cases \(m,n,p>0\). By imposing some additional hypothesis he determines the stability or instability of the stationary states. For part II, cf. the following review.
