The authors show how the general quantum symmetries acting on the Hilbert space of physical states in quantum field theory lead to the mathematical structure of ``bi-\(^*\)-algebras''. This new kind of symmetry generalizes the standard notion of a symmetry group and can be found in studying low dimensional quantum field theories.
