This article deals with generalizations of certain aspects of the well- established theory about Sasakian and Kählerian geometry to the pseudo- Riemannian situation. Sasakian manifolds with pseudo-Riemannian metrics were already studied by \textit{T. Takahashi} [Tohoku Math. J. 21, 271-289 (1969; Zbl 0187.436)] and indefinite Kähler manifolds were introduced by \textit{M. Barros} and \textit{A. Romero} [Math. Ann. 261, 55-62 (1982; Zbl 0476.53013)]. An \((\varepsilon)\)-almost contact metric structure \((f,\xi,\eta,g)\) on a manifold \(M\) consists of a tensor field \(f\) of type \((1,1)\), a vector field \(\xi\), a 1-form \(\eta\) and a pseudo-Riemannian metric \(g\) on \(M\) such that \(f^ 2 = -I + \eta \otimes \xi\), \(\eta(\xi) = 1\) and \(g(fX,fY) = g(X,Y) - \varepsilon\eta(X)\eta(Y)\) for all \(X,Y \in TM\) and some \(\varepsilon \in \{\pm 1\}\). If, in addition, the fundamental 2-form \(\Phi\), which is defined by \(\Phi(X,Y) = g(X,fY)\) for all \(X,Y \in TM\), satisfies \(\Phi = d\eta\) and if the integrability condition \([f,f] + 2d\eta \otimes \xi = 0\) holds, then \((f,\xi,\eta,g)\) is called an \((\varepsilon)\)-Sasakian structure. The authors discuss the existence of such structures and provide explicit examples of \((\varepsilon)\)-Sasakian structures on \(\mathbb{R}^{2n+1}\). Every orientable non-degenerate real hypersurface in an indefinite almost Hermitian manifold inherits an \((\varepsilon)\)-almost contact metric structure. Necessary and sufficient conditions for this induced structure to be \((\varepsilon)\)-Sasakian are obtained in case the ambient space is indefinite Kählerian. The connected \((\varepsilon)\)-Sasakian real hypersurfaces of semi-Euclidean spaces turn out to be precisely the open parts of their pseudospheres and pseudohyperbolic spaces with radius 1. The real hypersurfaces of indefinite complex space forms with parallel structure field \(\xi\) are classified. Finally, the causal character of real hypersurfaces in indefinite complex space forms whose inherited \((\varepsilon)\)-almost contact metric structure \((f,\xi,\eta,g)\) is \((\varepsilon)\)-cosymplectic is determined, where \((f,\xi,\eta,g)\) is called \((\varepsilon)\)-cosymplectic if both \(\eta\) and \(\Phi\) are closed.
