Let \(A\) be a hereditary, finite dimensional \(k\)-algebra, where \(k\) is an algebraically closed field and let us consider finite dimensional \(A\)- modules. An indecomposable module \(M\) is a brick if \(\text{End}_ A(M) = k\) and a stone if \(\text{Ext}(M,M) = 0\). Hence, components of tilting modules are stones and, it can be proved easily, stones are bricks. A regular module \(E\) is elementary if for all regular submodules \(U\), \(E/U\) is not regular. Any connected, wild, hereditary algebra \(A\) with more than two simples has at least one elementary stone. In this paper, elementary stones of wild hereditary algebras \(A\) are studied and the main theorem is the following. Theorem. Let \(A\) be a wild, hereditary, connected \(k\)-algebra and let \(E\) be a stone. The following are equivalent. (a) \(E\) is elementary, (b) Each short exact sequence \(0 \to U \to E^ n \to V \to 0\) with \(U\), \(V\) regular splits, (c) There is an integer \(N\) such that, if \(l \geq N\), then the category of regular modules generated by \(\tau^ l E\) coincides with \(\text{add }\tau^ l E\); (d) There exists an integer \(N\) such that, for \(l \geq N\), \(\tau^ l E\) has a preinjective tilting complement. Among the consequences, let us mention that if \(T\) is an \(A\)-tilting module with exactly one indecomposable regular direct summand, then \(E\) is an elementary stone.
