In this paper, the authors develop a semicontinuity-based existence theory in BV for a broad class of scalar variational integrals with linear growth, augmented by additional signed-measure terms. Their results extend and refine earlier work on anisotropic total variation and area-type functionals, and they lay the groundwork for a variational treatment of the corresponding Euler-Lagrange equations, in which the signed measure appears as a right-hand-side datum.
