A few constructions of threefolds with trivial canonical bundle (that is, Calabi-Yau threefolds) are given. The common idea of these constructions is to find smooth compactifications of certain families of elliptic curves over a surface. This leads to considering the families of plane cubic curves defined by an equation of the form \(\sum a_{ijk}X^ iY^ jZ^ k=0\) (the sum over \(0\leq i,j,k\leq 3\), \(i+j+k=3)\), where \(a_{ijk}\) are sections of certain line bundles over a rational surface \(S\), and \(X,Y,Z\) are sections of line bundles over the variety \(P\) of a fiber bundle \(P\to S\), whose fibers are \(\mathbb{P}^ 2\). In some cases the above equation provides singular varieties which can yet be resolved into non-singular ones with trivial canonical bundles by crepant or small blow ups. The base surfaces \(S\) are chosen to be \(\mathbb{P}^ 2\) with \(k\) points blown up \((k=0,1,\ldots,9)\), or the Hirzebruch surface \(\mathbb{F}_ 2\).
