The authors analyze the convergence of the so-called quasi-elastic solution method proposed by \textit{R. A. Schapery} [J. Franklin Inst. 279, 268-289 (1965; Zbl 0151.371)] when this method is applied to the initial value problem \(y''+A(x)y+B(x)L(y,x)=f(x)\), \(y(0)=\alpha\), \(y'(0)=\beta\), \(0\leq x\leq b\), and to the boundary value problem \(y''+A(x)y+B(x)L(y,x)=f(x)\), \(y(0)=\alpha\), \(y(b)=\gamma\), \(0\leq x\leq b\). Above, \(L(y,x)=\int^ x_ 0K(x,t)y(t)dt\). For example, it is shown that if \(A,B,F,K\) are continuous, if \(y\) solves the initial value problem, then \(y=\sum^ \infty_{k=0}v_ k\), where \(v_ k''+H(x)v_ k=e_ k(x)\), \(v_ 0(0)=\alpha\), \(v_ 0'(0)=\beta\), \(v_ k(0)=v_ k'(0)=0\), \(k=1,2,3,\dots\), \(e_ 0(x)=f(x)\), \(e_ k(x)=B(x)\bigl[L(1,x)v_{k-1}(x)-L(v_{k-1},x)\bigr]\), \(k=1,2,3,\ldots\). Estimates for the convergence rate of the infinite series to \(y\) are derived. Some numerical examples are given.
