It is investigated when \(\beta X\) or \(\beta X\setminus X\) is strongly countable dimensional, or countably dimensional, or weakly infinite dimensional (in the sense of Alexandroff or Smirnov) for metrizable \(X\). For instance, it is proved the following Theorem (4.7): If \(X\) is paracompact and Lindelöf at infinity (i.e. \(\beta X\setminus X\) is Lindelöf) and if every compact subset of \(X\) is a \(G_ \delta\), then the following are equivalent: (a) \(\beta X\) is s.c.d.; (a') both \(X\) and \(\beta X\setminus X\) are s.c.d.; (b) every compact subset of \(X\) or \(\beta X\setminus X\) is s.c.d.; (c) there is a compact s.c.d. \(K\subset X\) such that \(\dim F<\infty\) whenever \(F\) is closed in \(X\) and misses \(K\).
