This paper is a continuation of the works by \textit{A. Lubotzky, A. Mann} and \textit{D. Segal} [Isr. J. Math. 82, 363-371 (1993)] and by \textit{A. Mann} and \textit{D. Segal} [Proc. Lond. Math. Soc., III. Ser. 61, 529-545 (1990; Zbl 0722.20021)]. Let \(G\) be a group with polynomial subgroup growth, i.e. a residually finite group for which there is an exponent \(s\) such that the number of subgroups of index \(n\) is bounded by \(n^ s\). Adding to the previously known restrictions on chief factors of such groups, the author proves that the dimension of any Abelian chief factor between normal subgroups of finite index in \(G\) is bounded. There is also a bound for the number of generators for arbitrary finite factor groups of \(G\). In the case when \(G\) is profinite as well, it is shown that the number of generators of index \(n\) increases rather slowly with \(n\), it is in fact \(o(\log n)\). Some connections between properties of \(G\) and its profinite completion are also established.
