The classical ``Cantor ladder'' is the function \(f:[0,1]\to [0,1]\) which is the fixed point of the operator \[ (Lf)(t)=\begin{cases}\frac{1}{2}f(3t),&0\leq t< \frac{1}{3},\\ \frac{1}{2},&\frac{1}{3}\leq t < \frac{2}{3},\\ \frac{1}{2}+\frac{1}{2}f(3t-2),&\frac{2}{3}\leq t\leq 1.\end{cases} \] In the present paper, the authors consider generalizations~\(C(t)\) of this classical Cantor ladder by allowing the number, position and height of the steps to vary. They are interested in the asymptotic properties (as \(\lambda\to\infty\)) of the integral \[ E(\lambda)=\int_0^1 e^{\lambda C(t)}\,dt; \] in particular, they derive (in some cases) exact and (in other cases) asymptotic series expansions for \(E(\lambda)\).
