The authors introduce a very general model of short-range, self-interacting random walk on \(\mathbb Z^d, \;d\geq 2\) with the following property: the average drift is strictly positive in a fixed direction \(\ell\) if the particle visits a site for the first time; otherwise it is zero. Particular instances of such excited or cookie random walks have been studied previously, following a first paper by \textit{I. Benjamini} and \textit{D. B. Wilson} [Electron. Commun. Probab. 8, 86--92 (2003; Zbl 1060.60043)]. Using martingale methods, the authors prove that the process is ballistic in the direction \(\ell\), with a deterministic speed \(v\), and prove convergence to Brownian motion for the process in the co-moving frame. Their results extend to the average law for random walks in random environments.
