Let \((A,H)\) be a principally polarized complex abelian variety (PPAV) of dimension \(g\). If \(A=\mathbb{C}^g/L\), then the lattice \(L\), equipped with the norm induced by the positive definite hermitian form \(H\), has \(2g\) successive minima. \textit{P. Buser} and \textit{P. Karnak} [Invent. Math. 117, No. 1, 27--56 (1994; Zbl 0814.14033)] showed that the square of the first minimum of a Jacobian is bounded from above by \(\log(4g)\), in contrast with generic PPAV, for which this invariant may be of order \(g\). In the paper under review, it is proved that the square of the second minimum of a Jacobian is equally of order \(\log(g)\), and the square of the first minimum of the Jacobian of a hyperelliptic Riemann surface is bounded from above by a constant.
