      n the paper under review, the asymptotic behavior of matrix coefficients \(t^l_{mn}(g)= (T_l(g)e_{n,l},e_{m,l})\) of the principal series unitary representations \((T_l(\begin{pmatrix} a & b\\\Nc& d\end{pmatrix})f)(x) = |bx+d|^{2l}f(\frac{ax+c}{bx+d})\) of \(G=\mathrm{SL}(2,\mathbb R)= KA_+K\) at the basis \(\{e_{m,l}\}_{m\in\mathbb Z}\), gives rise to new (in comparison with the classical approximation - Remark 2) limit relations in approximating by Whittaker functions.\N\NThe author shows (Theorem 1) that the function \(\sqrt{m}\mathfrak P^l_{mn}(mx)\), for \(n\in \mathbb Z, l = -\frac{1}{2} + i\lambda, \lambda\in \mathbb R\) and \(x>0\) approaches to the Whittaker function \(\frac{(-1)^{m-n}}{m^{i\lambda}\Gamma(n-l)} W_{n,i\lambda}(\frac{2}{x})\) as \(m\to\infty\), where \(\mathfrak P^l_{mn}(\cosh 2\tau) = t^l_{mn}(\begin{pmatrix} e^\tau & 0\\\N0 & e^{-\tau}\end{pmatrix})\) as a function \(\mathfrak P^l_{mn}: [1,\infty) \to \mathbb C\).\N\NFor the entire collection see [Zbl 1562.17002].
