\(\vec\phi:= (\phi_j)_{1\leq j\leq N}\) is a self-similar iterated system, if each \(\phi_j\) is a similitude. A (unique) compact set \(A\subset\mathbb{R}^d\) is the attractor of \(\vec\phi\) if it is invariant under the map \(\bigcup^N_{j=1} \phi_j\). The system satisfies the open set condition (OSC), if there exists a feasible set of \(\vec\phi\), an open set \(O\subset\mathbb{R}^d\) such that \(\phi_j(O)\subset O\) and \(\phi_j(O)\cap\phi_k(O)= \emptyset\) for \(j\neq k\). The authors survey several basic results including (a) the Hausdorff dimension formula for \(\vec\phi\in\mathrm{OSC}\) (Moran-Hutchinson), (b) the tiling of \(\operatorname{int}(\operatorname{conv}A)\) for \(\vec\phi\in \mathrm{OSC}\) with nonconvex attractor \(A\) and \(\operatorname{int}(\operatorname{conv}A)\) as a feasible set for \(\vec\phi\) (Pearse), (c) if in addition \(\operatorname{int}A= \emptyset\), then, under some mild condition, there exists an analog of the classical tube formula for the (inner) \(\varepsilon\)-neighborhood \((\operatorname{int}\operatorname{conv}A))_{\varepsilon}\) (Lapidus-Pearse-Weinstein). The authors present a generalization of tiling construction that can be applied also to self-affine \(\vec\phi\) (the maps \(\phi_j\) are affine constructions of \(\mathbb{R}^d\)) and characterize relations between parallel sets of \(A\) and this tiling.
