In a series of papers, \textit{C. Deninger} has initiated a program that attempts to discover and understand analogies between arithmetic geometry and analysis on foliated metrized spaces, see for instance [Jahresber. Dtsch. Math.-Ver. 103, No. 3, 79--100 (2001; Zbl 1003.11029); Lond. Math. Soc. Lect. Note Ser. 354, 174--190 (2008; Zbl 1163.37006)]. In the paper under review, the author introduces foliated analogues of Arakelov geometry over both arithmetic curves and arithmetic surfaces. It should be noted that he uses foliations rather than foliated spaces, which figure prominently in Deninger's program. The analogies developed in the paper under review are quite strong in the one-dimensional situation and a detailed dictionary between the arithmetic and the foliated world is provided in Table 1. Moreover, foliated versions of the Riemann-Hurwitz formula (Theorem 2.49) and the Grothendieck-Riemann-Roch theorem (Theorem 2.63) are proved. The main result in the two-dimensional situation is a foliated analogue of the Arakelov adjunction formula (Proposition 3.31). Again, a dictionary is provided (Table 2). Finally, a concrete example, namely the Reeb foliation, for the theory developed in the previous sections is discussed.
