Let \(E\) be a Banach space of analytic functions on the unit ball \(\mathbb{B}_n\) of the Euclidean space \(\mathbb{C}^n\). Assume that the constant functions are contained in \(E\). Denote by \(\| \cdot \|_E\) the norm in \(E\) and by \(\| \cdot \|_{E^*}\) the norm in the Banach dual space \(E^*\). {\parindent=9mm Consider the following conditions on \(E\): \begin{itemize} \item[(C1)] There are positive constants \(s\) and \(C\) such that, for each function \(f \in E\) and \(z\in \mathbb{B}_n\), \[ |f(z)|\leq C\;\frac{\|f\|_E}{(1-|z|^2)^s}\,. \] \item [(C2)] The analytic polynomials are dense in \(E\). \item [(C3)] \(\|\delta_f\|_{E^*} \to \infty\) as \(|z|\to 1\), where \(\delta_z\) is the \textit{evaluation functional at} \(z\in \mathbb{B}_n\) defined by \(\delta_z(f)=f(z)\), \(f\in E\). \end{itemize}} There are plenty of examples of Banach spaces of analytic functions satisfying (C1), (C2), and (C3): Hardy spaces, standard weighted Bergman spaces, the little Bloch space, VMOA, etc. Given an analytic map \(\varphi: \mathbb{B}_n \to \mathbb{B}_n\), the composition operator \(C_\varphi:E \to E\) with symbol \(\varphi\) is defined by \(C_\varphi(f)=f\circ \varphi\). In the paper under review, the main purpose is to show a very short proof of the characterization (the symbol is an automorphism of the unit ball) of Fredholm composition operators acting on Banach spaces satisfying the three conditions (C1), (C2), (C3).
