Let \(R\) be a Noetherian ring. An object \(G\) in \(\mathrm{mod} R\) is a strong generator if there exist integers \(n\geq 0\) and \(s\geq 0\) such that for every finitely generated \(R\)-module \(M\), the \(s\)-th syzygy \(M\) can be obtained from \(G\) using at most \(n\) extensions.\N\NThe authors prove that for every prime ideal \(\mathfrak{p}\) the category \(\mathrm{mod}R/\mathfrak{p}\) has a strong generator if and noly if the bounded derived category \(\mathrm{D}^b(R/\mathfrak{p})\) has a strong generator. Moreover, in these conditions the ring \(R\) has finite Krull dimension, and for every ideal \(I\) the categories \(\mathrm{mod} R/I\) and \(\mathrm{D}^b(R/I)\) admit strong generators (Theorem A).\N\NThe paper also contains some descriptions for strong generators and interesting applications of the technique used to prove Theorem A for some computations of upper bounds of Rouquier dimension.
