It is recognized that the compact quantum groups and their duals represent a natural generalization of the Pontryagin duality to the case of non-commutative groups. To study such groups, one considers a representation of the quantum group \({\mathbb G}\) by bounded linear operators on a Hilbert space \({\mathcal H}\) and then takes a closure in an operator norm; thus one gets a \(C^*\)-algebra \(C^*({\mathbb G})\) of the quantum group \({\mathbb G}\). The operator norm is usually taken to be the maximal or the minimal operator norm and, therefore, one gets two non-isomorphic \(C^*\)-algebras \(C^*({\mathbb G}_{\max})\) or \(C^*({\mathbb G}_{\min})\). By an ``exotic'' norm one understands a norm \(||\bullet||_{\mathrm{exotic}}\) such that \(||\bullet||_{\min} < ||\bullet||_{\mathrm{exotic}} < ||\bullet||_{\max}\). The authors study the exotic norm \(C^*\)-algebras of the compact quantum groups and their relations to the Kazhdan property (T).
