A rigorous mathematical stability analysis of a DC-DC Buck converter is presented by using tools from nonsmooth and variational analysis. The problem is formulated as a nonsmooth dynamical system of Filippov type. First, the authors show that a DC-DC Buck converter can be described by the following initial value differential inclusion \[ x^{\prime }(t)\in Ax(t)+b+F(t,x(t)),\quad x(0)=x_{0}\in \mathbb{R}^{2}, \] where \[ x=\;(x_{1} \;,\; x_{2})=\;(v^{\prime}\;,\; v),\;b=(-\frac{V_{\mathrm{in}}}{2LC}\;,\;0), \] \(A\) is a \(2\times2\) matrix with \(a_{11}=-\frac{1}{RC}\), \(a_{12}=-\frac{1}{LC}\), \(a_{21}=1\), \(a_{22}=0\), \(F(t,x)=(\frac{V_{\mathrm{in}}}{2LC}\mathrm{ sign}(V_{r}(t)-x_{2},~0)\), \(V_{r}(t)=V_{\mathrm{ref}}(t)+\frac{1}{a}v_{r}(t)\) and \(R\), \(C\), \(L\), \(a\), \(V_{\mathrm{in}}\), \(V_{\mathrm{ref}}\), \(v_{r}\), \(v\) represent the resistance, the capacitance, the inductance, the gain of amplifier, the input voltage, the reference voltage, the voltage of convertor, and the voltage of capacitor, respectively, for the DC-DC Buck converter. Secondly, the existence of a solution, stability and asymptotical stability results for this model are obtained. Also, the authors remark that the uniqueness of solutions remains an open problem. Finally, by means of an Euler scheme, a numerical simulation for trajectories is given.
