In applying the classification of finite simple groups to problems in character theory, it is important to understand the action of automorphisms of a finite quasisimple group \(G\) on the set of irreducible characters of \(G\) in some detail and to understand the extensions of the irreducible characters to their stabilisers in a suitable group. As part of the programme to prove the McKay conjecture, a condition \(A(\infty)\) was introduced to capture information on these group actions and extensions. This property is known to hold for groups of Lie type other than \(D\) and \({}^2D\). In [\textit{B. Späth}, Nagoya Math. J. 252, 906--958 (2023; Zbl 1530.20045)] the author began the proof that \(A(\infty)\) holds in these remaining cases. This is completed in the current paper. Further, an \(\mathrm{Aut}(G)\)-equivariant Jordan decomposition for the irreducible characters is given for these groups. These results are of significant general utility.\N\NCombined with previous work of the author and others, the above results are applied to show that the McKay conjecture holds for the prime \(p=3\), that is, for every finite group \(G\), the number of irreducible characters of degree prime to \(3\) of \(G\) is equal to the number of such irreducible characters of \(N_G(P)\), where \(P\) is a Sylow \(3\)-subgroup of \(G\).
