In this article, the authors study the behavior of the Hardy-Littlewood maximal operator \(\mathcal{M}\) and the Littlewood-Paley operators: the \(g\)-function and the area function \(S\), acting on the space of continuous mean oscillation functions, \(CMO(\mathbb{R}^n)\). Specifically, the main theorems contained in this paper state the following. Suppose \(f \in CMO(\mathbb{R}^n)\) then\N\begin{itemize}\N\item either \(\mathcal{M} f \equiv \infty\) or \( \mathcal{M} f \in CMO(\mathbb{R}^n) \);\N\item either \(\mathcal{S} f \equiv \infty\) or \( \mathcal{S} f \in CMO(\mathbb{R}^n) \);\N\item either \( g (f) \equiv \infty\) or \( g (f) \in CMO(\mathbb{R}^n) \).\N\end{itemize}\N\NIt is well known that the space of bounded mean oscillation functions, \(BMO(\mathbb{R}^n)\), is the dual space of the Hardy space \(H^1 (\mathbb{R}^n)\), while the predual space of \(H^1 (\mathbb{R}^n)\) is \(CMO(\mathbb{R}^n)\). Also, \(CMO(\mathbb{R}^n)\) can be defined as the closure in the \(BMO\)-norm of the space of continuous functions with compact support.\N\NThe above results are complemented by highly non-trivial examples showing that the operators under study can be equivalently infinite for some functions belonging to the \(CMO\)-space. In addition, a detailed comparison is provided with the corresponding results already known for these operators acting on the spaces \(BMO(\mathbb{R}^n)\) and \(VMO(\mathbb{R}^n)\), since \(CMO(\mathbb{R}^n)\) is a proper subspace of both.
