Let \(F\) be a global field and \( \mathbb{A} \) be the adèles over \(F\). For an algebraic group \(G\) defined over \(F\), an invariant \( \tau ( G ) \in \mathbb{R} \) called the Tamagawa number can be associated to \(G\). If \( \mathbb{G} \) denotes the group \(G(\mathbb{A})\), the Tamagawa number is the volume of a subspace of the quotient space \( G(F)\setminus \mathbb{G}\) with respect to a certain left \(G(F)\)-invariant Haar measure on \( \mathbb{G} \) called the Tamagawa measure. Weil conjectured that for an absolutely simple simply connected algebraic group \(G\) over a global field, the Tamagawa number \( \tau ( G ) \) equals 1. This was first proved for split groups over number fields by \textit{R. P. Langlands} [Proc. Symp. Pure Math. 9, 143--148 (1966; Zbl 0218.20041)] and over function fields by \textit{G. Harder} [Ann. Math. (2) 100, 249--306 (1974; Zbl 0309.14041)]. The proof given by Langlands was rewritten in the adelic language for quasisplit groups by \textit{M. Rapoport} [``Détermination du nombre de Tamagawa des groupes semi-simples quasi-déployés sur des corps de nombres'', Preprint] and by \textit{K. F. Lai} [Compos. Math. 41, 153--188 (1980; Zbl 0416.20035)], thus giving a unified proof for the split and quasisplit groups over a number field. Using Arthur's trace formula, \textit{R. E. Kottwitz} [Ann. Math. (2) 127, No. 3, 629--646 (1988; Zbl 0678.22012)] proved Weil's conjecture over number fields. The proof of Weil's conjecture over function fields for any semisimple group \(G\) was given by \textit{D. Gaitsgory} and \textit{J. Lurie} [Weil's conjecture for function fields: volume I. Princeton, NJ: Princeton University Press (2019; Zbl 1439.14006)] by a method different from the one used in the earlier works of Langlands [loc. cit], Lai [loc. cit], Rapoport [loc. cit] and Kottwitz [loc. cit]. In another direction, the theory of Eisenstein series was developed for general reductive groups over function fields in the works of \textit{L. E. Morris} [Can. J. Math. 34, 91--168 (1982; Zbl 0499.22021); Can. J. Math. 34, 1112--1182 (1982; Zbl 0505.22017)]. Now, when this theory has been well developed, it is reasonable to proceed as in the works of Harder [loc. cit] and Lai [loc. cit] in order to give a direct proof of Weil's conjecture for quasisplit groups over function fields. The article under review should be considered as a contribution towards confirming Weil's conjecture for function fields via the strategy used for number fields. The main theorem of this article is the following:\N\NTheorem. Let \(F\) be a function field of a smooth projective curve over \(\mathbb{F}_{q} \) where \(q\) is different from \(2\) and \(G\) be a quasisplit semisimple simply connected group over \(F\). Then \( \tau ( G ) = 1 \).
