The paper concerns the conjecture of P. Erdős, R. A. Mollin and P. Walsh stating that there do not exist three consecutive powerful numbers. The author studies a variant of this problem and proves that there are no three consecutive powerful numbers such that the middle term is a perfect cube and each of the other two has only one prime factor occurring to an odd power. The proof combines elementary number-theoretic arguments with the theory of Pell-type equations and elliptic curves.\N\NThe article is clearly written and provides a natural invitation to further investigations on powerful numbers and related Diophantine problems.
