The author studies the growth of the so called codimension sequences for identities \(c_n(A)\), \(n\geq 1\), of finite-dimensional algebras \(A\) with unity over a field of characteristic zero. In case of an exponential growth one tries to consider the so called exponent of the algebra: \(\exp(A)=\lim_{n\to\infty}\root n\of{c_n(A)}\). For a three-dimensional algebra \(A\), the author proves that the exponent exists and \(\exp(A)\in\{1,2,3\}\). If \(A\) is a three-dimensional simple algebra with unity over a field of characteristic zero, the author proves that \(\exp(A)=3\). For arbitrary finite-dimensional algebras with unity, the author proves that the codimension growth either is polynomial or is not slower than \(2^n\). Also, the author gives an example of a finite-dimensional algebra with the codimension growth rate \(a^n\) with a fractional exponent, namely, \(\exp(A)=a=\frac{3}{\root 3\of 4}+1\).
