Consider a map \(f: K\to M\). The set of roots of \(f\) at a point \(x_0\) in \(M\) is the pre-image \(f^{-1}(x_0)\) of \(f\). In Nielsen root theory, the set of roots of a given map is divided into some subsets, which are called root classes. It is known that the sets of root classes are homotopy invariant in the following sense: there is a one-to-one correspondence between the sets of root classes of two homotopic maps. Thus, one can talk about minimal root classes in the sense of homotopy. The author of the paper under review discusses such a question: For a given map \(f\), is there a map \(g\) homotopic to \(f\) such that the number of roots of each root class of \(g\) is minimal? He considers the situation where \(K\) is a \(CW\)-complex and \(M\) is a manifold, and both \(K\) and \(M\) have the same dimension \(n\) with \(n\geq 3\). Some sufficient conditions on maps or the domain \(K\) are obtained so that the question mentioned above has a positive answer.
