In [J. Math. Soc. Japan 35, 663--681 (1983; Zbl 0527.53004)], \textit{H. Fujimoto} introduced the notion of the non-integrated defect for a holomorphic map of an open Riemann surface into the complex projective space \(\mathbb P^n(\mathbb C)\), and he obtained some results analogous to the classical defect relation. Moreover, in [Jap. J. Math., New Ser. 11, 233--264 (1985; Zbl 0591.32029)] he generalized those results to the case of meromorphic maps of an \(m\)-dimensional complete Kähler manifold \(M\) into \(\mathbb P^n(\mathbb C)\) as follows. Let \(\omega\) be a Kähler form on \(M\). Assume that the universal covering \(\widetilde M\) of \(M\) is biholomorphic to a ball in \(\mathbb{C}^n\), and \(f: M\to\mathbb P^n(\mathbb C)\) is a meromorphic map satisfying the condition \((C_p)\) for some nonnegative constant \(\rho\), that is, there exists a certain function \(h: M\to\mathbb R\) such that \[ \rho\Omega_f+ dd^c\log(h^2)\geq \text{Ric\,}\omega, \] where \(\Omega_f\) denotes the pullback of the Fubini-Study form on \(\mathbb P^n(\mathbb C)\) under \(f\). Then, in [Zbl 0591.32029] it is proved that \[ \sum^q_{j=1} \delta^n_f(H_j)\leq n+1+\rho n(n+ 1), \] for arbitrary hyperplanes \(\{H_j; j= 1,\dots,q\}\) in \(\mathbb P^n(\mathbb C)\) in general position. Recently, \textit{M. Ru} and \textit{S. Sogome} [Trans. Am. Math. Soc. 364, No. 3, 1145--1162 (2012; Zbl 1236.32010)] extended Fujimoto's result to the case where \(f(M)\) intersects with hypersurfaces instead of hyperplanes. In the paper under review, the author obtains an important improvement to the above-mentioned results. The author's main result is the following. Suppose that an algebraically nondegenerate meromorphic map \(f: M\to\mathbb P^n(\mathbb C)\) satisfies the condition \((C_p)\). Let \(D_1,\dots, D_q\), be hypersurfaces of degree \(d_j\) \((j= 1,\dots,q)\) in \(\mathbb P^n(\mathbb C)\), which are located in the \(k\)-subgeneral position \((k\geq n)\), where \(D_1,\dots,D_q\) are said to be in the \(k\)-subgeneral position if at most \(k\) of these hypersurfaces meet at one point in \(\mathbb P^n(\mathbb C)\). Set \(d=\text{l.c.m.}\{d_1,\dots, d_q\}\). Then, for every \(\varepsilon> 0\), \[ \sum^q_{j=1} \delta^{l-1}_f(D_j)\leq k(n+1)+ \varepsilon+ {\rho l(l-1)\over d}, \] where \(l\) is a constant bounded by a constant depending only on \(n\), \(d\), \(k\) and \(\varepsilon\). The technique of the proof in this paper is based on Fujimoto's, Chen's, Ru's, Yan's and Sogome's techniques.
