Semi-abelian categories arise as natural generalizations of abelian categories. It is known that they need not be quasi-abelian, as was conjectured by Raikov in the sixties of the past century. Several classes of locally convex spaces were found to be semi-abelian, but not quasi-abelian. Some criteria for left or right semi-abelian categories are collected in the paper. More importantly, it is shown that one-sided semi-abelian categories arise very naturally in functional analysis: The category of bornological Hausdorff spaces is left but not right semi-abelian, while the category of complete locally convex spaces is right but not left semi-abelian.
