In the famous finite-element method used for many applications in solving for example elliptic partial differential equations, interpolation approaches to fix the coefficients of the finite-element approximation are one way to choose the approximants. In this paper, barycentric interpolation methods are considered. For them, the question of the accuracy and convergence of the approximation arises, and optimal convergence estimates are found in this article for first-order interpolants. The underlying domains for the approximants are taken to be convex, planar and polygonal. For the various known approaches to construct the approximants à la Wachspress or Sibson for instance, the optimal convergence estimates are applicable as shown by the authors, so long as certain geometric conditions on the aforementioned polygon are fulfilled.
