The main interest of the authors is to devise an efficient numerical scheme for the adjoint-aided (numerical) homogenization of flows through heterogeneous thin domains (membranes). The considered inclusions are placed in a locally-periodic fashion inside the target domain. No theoretical results are provided regarding why the method actually works, but the obtained numerical simulations are very promising.
