The paper is concerned with delay differential equations with distributed delay and a comparison of methods and solutions with those for delay differential equations with multiple delays. The paper is motivated by the fact that when the former type of equation is approximated using a quadrature method, the resulting equation is of the latter type. Following an introduction, the paper presents information on FCRK methods and shows how these can be applied to distributed delay problems. Resuts are given on convergence, and there is discussion of implementation issues. Breaking points, where smoothness of the solution is absent, are also discussed, as is the complxity collapse that has been noticed elsewhere. There are several interesting isights in the examples provided, but the key result of the paper lies in the ability to predict the number of composite intervals needed in a discrete scheme to maintain overall accuracy, so that reliable methods can be chosen a priori. The approach to solving distributed delay equations through approximation by multi-delay problems is thereby validated.
