Summary: We consider a modified hybrid steepest-descent method by using a viscosity approximation method with a weakly contractive mapping for finding the common element of the set of common fixed points for an infinite family of nonexpansive mappings and the set of solutions of a system of an equilibrium problem. The sequence is generated from an arbitrary initial point which converges in norm to the unique solution of the variational inequality under some suitable conditions in a real Hilbert space. The results presented in this paper generalize and improve the results of \textit{A. Moudafi} [J. Math. Anal. Appl. 241, No. 1, 46--55 (2000; Zbl 0957.47039)], \textit{G. Marino} and \textit{H.-K. Xu} [J. Math. Anal. Appl. 318, No. 1, 43--52 (2006; Zbl 1095.47038)], \textit{M. Tian} [Nonlinear Anal., Theory Methods Appl., Ser. A, Theory Methods 73, No. 3, 689--694 (2010; Zbl 1192.47064)], \textit{S. Saeidi} [Math. Comput. Modelling 52, No. 1--2, 134--142 (2010; Zbl 1201.65115)], and some others. Finally, we give an application to minimization problems and a numerical example which supports our main theorem in the last part.
