The authors establish well-posedness of algorithms used to compute approximate solutions of Maxwell's equations on an unbounded region. A smaller domain of interest \(Q_I\) is considered, and perfectly matched layers are used on the complement of \(Q_I\). It is assumed that the computational domain \(Q\) is a rectangular solid, and on the boundary, an absorbing boundary condition is used. The authors prove well-posedness of the resulting initial boundary value problem. For the resulting Helmholtz equation, the Laplace transform is used and it is shown that for real values of the transform variable, the Helmholtz system has a unique solution. Using regularity theory, the authors then are able to study the Maxwell system from the previous Helmholtz system.
