The article deals with a standard question in commutative algebra. Namely, for a local ring \(A\) and a nonzerodivisor \(a\in A\), if \(A/aA\) has good singularities, does \(A\) also? This article answers this question for \(p\)-seminormality and ``reduced and steadfast,'' and gives new proofs for normality and weak normality. The authors exhibit fluent command of techniques in the arithmetic of Noetherian rings.
