This article provides a historical account of \textit{The Analyst}, the first American mathematical journal to complete a decade of uninterrupted publication (1874--1883), and its founder, Joel E. Hendricks, who established the journal with the goal of connecting mathematicians, teachers, and students at a time when the United States had few professional practitioners.\N\N\textit{The Analyst} published articles in mathematics, astronomy, and statistics, and featured a popular problem section. Hendricks promoted clarity of exposition and upheld high editorial standards despite limited resources.\N\NSections 4 and 5 present brief biographies of regular contributors, illustrating the journal's broad reach and intellectual variety, as well as its role in fostering mathematical exchange across disciplines and regions.\N\NAfter Hendricks's retirement, \textit{The Analyst} was succeeded by the \textit{Annals of Mathematics}. The authors convincingly demonstrate that \textit{The Analyst} made a significant contribution to the early development of American mathematics.\N\NFor the entire collection see [Zbl 1557.01004].
