Let \(I\) be a nonzero squarefree monomial ideal of a polynomial ring \(S = k[x_1, \ldots, x_n]\) where \(k\) is a field. Let \(\dim S/I=d.\) Let \(\mu\) be the number of associated primes of \(S/I\) of dimension d. It is proved that that the multiplicity of powers of \(I\) is given by \(e_0(S/I^s)=\mu \binom{n-d+ s-1}{s-1}\) for all \(s\geq 1.\)\N\NIt was proved by \textit{J. Herzog} et al. [Math. Proc. Camb. Philos. Soc. 145, No. 3, 623--642 (2008; Zbl 1157.13013)] that for any homogeneous ideal \(I\) in \(S\), the \(i^{th}\) Hilbert coefficient \(e_i(S/I^s)\) is a polynomial \(P_i(s)\) for all large \(s\) and \(\deg P_i(s)\leq n-d+i\) for all \(i=0,1,\ldots, d.\) The main theorem is applied to determine the multiplicity of powers of the path ideal of a graph.
