Let \(q>0\) and \(a\) be integers satisfying \(\gcd(a,q)=1\), and for the complex sequence \((a_n)_{n\leq 1}\) define\N\[\N\mathcal{S}(x;a,q)=\sum_{\substack{n\leq x\\\Nn\equiv a\bmod{q}}}a_n.\N\]\NFor integer \(d \geq 2\), let \(\mathcal{F}(d)\) be the set of all cuspidal automorphic representations \(\pi\) of \(\mathrm{GL}(d)\) over \(\mathbb{Q}\) with trivial central character. Let \(q_\pi\) denote the arithmetic conductor of \(\pi\). For each \(\pi\in\mathcal{F}(d)\), the corresponding \(L\)-function is defined, for \(\Re(s)>1\), by the following absolutely convergent Dirichlet series\N\[\NL(s,\pi)=\sum_{n=1}^\infty\lambda_\pi(n)n^{-s}.\N\]\NIn the paper under review, the authors approximate \(\mathcal{S}(x;a,q)\) for \(a_n=\lambda_\pi(n)\), unconditionally, and conditionally under assuming the generalized Ramanujan conjecture holds for \(\pi\). They also approximate \(\mathcal{S}(x;a,q)\) for \(a_n=\lambda_{\pi\times\widetilde{\pi}}(n)\), the coefficient of the Rankin-Selberg \(L\)-function \(L(s,\pi\times\widetilde{\pi})\), where \(\widetilde{\pi}\) denotes the contragredient of \(\pi\in\mathcal{F}(d)\). These two results and some others are some specific applications of a general technical approximation \(\mathcal{S}(x;a,q)\) concerning the coefficients of \(L\)-functions that satisfy standard functional equations, introduced by \textit{W. Duke} and \textit{H. Iwaniec} in a series of papers including [Am. J. Math. 116, No. 1, 207--217 (1994; Zbl 0820.11032)].
