All spaces are assumed to be infinite Hausdorff topological spaces. For a space \(X\), let \(\mathscr{F}(X)\) denote the space of all non-empty closed subsets of \(X\) with the Vietoris topology, and we assume that every \(\mathscr{D} \subset \mathscr{F}(X)\) is equipped with the relative topology. For \(\mathscr{D} \subset \mathscr{F}(X)\), a map \(f\colon \mathscr{D} \to X\) is called a selection (or a hyperspace selection) for \(\mathscr{D}\) if \(f(S) \in S\) for every \(S \in \mathscr{D}\). For subsets \(\mathscr{G}\) and \(\mathscr{H}\) of \(\mathscr{F}(X)\) with \(\varnothing \ne \mathscr{G} \subset \mathscr{H}\), the pair \((\mathscr{G},\mathscr{H})\) is said to have the selection-extension property if every continuous selection for \(\mathscr{G}\) can be extended to a continuous selection for \(\mathscr{H}\). In this paper, the author studies the selection-extension property asking many questions. Let \(\mathscr{F}_n(X)\), \(\Sigma(X)\) and \(\mathscr{C}(X)\) denote the collection of subsets of at most \(n\) points, that of finite subsets, and that of compact subsets, respectively. The theorems proven in this paper include the following:\N\NFor a zero-dimensional strongly collectionwise Hausdorff space \(X\), if there exists a continuous selection for \(\mathscr{F}_2(X)\), then \((\mathscr{F}_2(Z),\mathscr{F}_2(X))\) has the selection-extension property for each closed discrete subset \(Z\) of \(X\).\N\NFor a suborderable space \(X\), the following are equivalent: (a) \(X\) is strongly zero-dimensional; (b) for every closed discrete subset \(Z\) of \(X\), \((\mathscr{F}_2(Z),\mathscr{F}_2(X))\) has the selection-extension property; (c) for every finite subset \(Z\) of \(X\), \((\mathscr{F}_2(Z),\mathscr{F}_2(X))\) has the selection-extension property.\N\NFor a compact space \(X\), if \((\mathscr{F}_2(Z), \mathscr{F}_2(X))\) has the selection-extension property for each countable discrete subspace \(Z\) of \(X\), then \(X\) is a finite set.\N\NFor a space \(X\) with a continuous selection for \(\mathscr{F}(X)\), \(X\) is countably compact and totally disconnected if and only if \((\Sigma(Z),\mathscr{F}(X))\) has the selection-extension property for each closed discrete subspace \(Z\) of \(X\).\N\NFor a metrizable space \(X\), the following are equivalent: (a) for every closed subset \(\mathscr{G}\) of \(\mathscr{C}(X)\), \((\mathscr{G},\mathscr{C}(X))\) has the selection-extension property; (b) for every closed subset \(Z\) of \(X\), \((\mathscr{F}_2(Z),\mathscr{F}_2(X))\) has the selection-extension property; (c) \(X\) is totally disconnected and orderable.\N\NFor a metrizable space \(X\), the following are equivalent: (a) \(X\) is totally disconnected and compact; (b) for every closed subset \(\mathscr{G}\) of \(\mathscr{C}(X)\), \((\mathscr{G},\mathscr{F}(X))\) has the selection-extension property; (c) for every countable closed discrete subset \(Z\) of \(X\), \((\Sigma(Z),\mathscr{F}(X))\) has the selection-extension property.\N\NThe author also discusses the following open question posed in [\textit{V. Gutev} and \textit{T. Nogura}, Appl. Gen. Topol. 5, No. 1, 71--78 (2004; Zbl 1064.54014)]: Does there exist a space \(X\) with a continuous selection for \(\mathscr{F}_2(X)\) such that \(\mathscr{F}_n(X)\) has no continuous selection for some \(n>2\)?
