The paper deals with variational problems with nonholonomic nonsmooth constraints. Since the classical theory cannot be applied, a shortening method for the Lagrangian function is developed, based on local existence and uniqueness of minimizers. This method allows to obtain existence and multiplicity results of critical points. Applications to various physical problems are also given.
